History Of the Unitarian Movemen in North East India

The history of the founding and growth of Unitarian religion in the North East India is the history of an emerging and fascinating personality of U Hajom Kissor Singh Nongbri. Kissor was born on June, 15, 1865 in Cherrapunjee. He was given mission education in the school run by the Welsh Calvanist Methodist Church up to matriculation grade. Kissor did not reach the University but he acquired the technique of self-education. At the age of fifteen, Kissor converted to the Calvanist faith. However, he became a questioning member with his doubts ever increasing. Slowly, his conviction grew that there was a ‘more Christ-like type of Christianity’ than the orthodox missionaries which he had received formal instruction. Soon his disenhancement with the Calvanist faith led him to break away from that Church and started a free religious movement which worshipped Only One True God, the living God. Kissor was not alone who believe that God was One and beneficent. He learned that there were other people in the other parts of the world who professed the like-faith who called themselves Unitarians. So, Kissor adopted the title ‘Ka Niam Unitarian’ (The Unitarian Religion) and dedicated his life to the redemption of his people from superstitious bondage which held them for centuries together. What matter if the Calvanist called him ‘atheist’ nad ‘an enemy of the Lord (Jesus)’ ridiculed him, persecuted him, burnt down his Jowai Church and finally succeeded. He stood firm in his convictions, courageously patiently and persistently.
To understand Hajom Kissor’s new religion, one must know how outside influences had made inroad into the tribes of Khasi and Jaintia Hills. So isolated had been tribes of the Khasi and Jaintia Hills from the stream of civilization that their society remained virtually static for centuries. By 1833, the ‘British Raj’ succeeded in controlling the elected hill chiefs by a loosely held bond, allowing them a large measure of independence and requiring no tribute.
In 1841, a far more potent influence came in the persons of Missionaries. They represented the Welsh Calvanist Methodist Church and from 1841 to 1904, the Church sent no less than 45 Missionaries, they raised the entire District from animism to the level of a peasant community largely Christian in belief and culture. Even, where the people are not yet freed from their old superstitious fears, the crude practices of a primitive faith have been softened by the raising of the general tone. The native standard of life has been immeasurably improved. They supplied the Khasi language with alphabets and translate the Bible. The illiterate Khasis attended the school run by the Missionaries, received instructions in the four “R’s”, the fourth being the zealously taught Christian Religion. They fought a desperate battle against drunkenness to which the natives were particularly prone. Their chief contribution which was their ancient faith.
On the other side of the coin it must be noted that when they did away with the Khasi fear of demons they substituted the fear of hell. It is sad to note that they westernized their Khasi converts and in doing so weaned them away from their traditional culture, which has much beauty and in the process nearly destroyed their tradition and culture and fortunately, the death knell has not been wrung.
Now coming back to Kissor’s new-found faith as already stated elsewhere, having broken away, Kissor, working on his own and drawing from traditional and Missionary concepts, envisioned and found a new religion called the Unitarian religion (Ka Niam Mane-Wei Blei). It was on September, 18, 1887, in his Jowai home, that a ‘church service’ was held, and with that momentous events, the founder of Khasi Unitarianism had taken the first definite step. To the present day, all Khasi (including Jaintia) Unitarian Churches commemorate this date (18th September) with Anniversary Celebrations and for the last three years the Day declared a local holiday by the Government of Meghalaya.
Dr. J.T.Sunderland, an American Unitarian stalwart, who visited the Khasi Hills in 1896 to comfort, give strength and encouragement to Kissor during the formative years and this to say of the Khasi Unitarian “I have never more been impressed with any religious movement than this in the Khasi Hills…. The whole movement is unique in the fact that it has sprung from the soil.”
The visit of Dr.J.T.Sunderlan had paved the way not only for further strengthening the bond of relationship but also for future visits. In later years and also very recently, there has been unending flow of visits of Unitarians friends, counterparts from America and England and each visits has been strengthened by a ‘pledge’ to continue to provide support to the cause of our indigenous movement, materially, morally and spiritually. Rightly said Dr. Roy Smith, the then General Secretary of the British General Assembly of British Unitarians and Free Christian Churches, “We British Unitarians share a common pride with our American co-religionist in having encouraged and helped the birth of Unitarianism in India without having planted the seed. The seed was there in Hajom Kissor Singh, and the liberal light of America and British Unitarianism in the last century enable it to take root and to grow steadily.”
The coming of (L) Annie Margaret Barr as a representative to the British Unitarians to the Khasi Hills in 1936 and her permanent stay here till she died on the 11th of August, 1973 was like an answer to urgent prayers of Khasi Unitarians. It was aptly remarked, “Miss Barr is to Khasi Unitarians what Dr. Sunderland was to Hajom Kissor Singh, a friend from a far who guides and sustains, appraises and understands.”
Besides being representatives, Miss Barr was a true adherent Gandhian ideal in the fact established a school in Kharang rural area on Gandhian type of Ashram-cum-school which served the need of the village children well and also run a clinic –cum-health centre which also served the need of twenty or more villages. In these efforts, Miss Barr was greatly helped by (L) Rev. D. Marbaniang who sacrificed government service for the sake of religious works.
In nursing the newly-found faith, Kissor received the moral support and encouraging of a Bengali Brahmo and amongst his own tribe one of his closets and best friend, remained to the end of his life uncovered to any of the group with Western names (Presbyterian, Catholic or Unitarian), proudly holding to his tribal faith of his father’s shorn of its superstition and fear. Jeebon Roy was a leader of his people, well educated yet retaining his independence of judgment and his pride in the tradition of his people. This man gave Kissor a great deal of moral support in the founding of the liberal religious movement, though he never actually joined it. But he gave him other kinds of support too. When Kissor started his first day-school at Jowai and found himself handicapped by the opposition of the Mission, which had hitherto and a monopoly in the field of Khasi education, and by the fact that there were no Khasi books available, save the wholly unsuitable ones in use in the Mission schools, it was Jeebon Roy who set to work himself, wrote a whole series of graded Khasi readers which he published at his own Press in Shillong.
The Basics Principles of Unitarian belief as enunciated by Kissor Singh are:
(i) Belief in One and Only One true God, the Transcendent Power, the Divine Force that creates and sustain life and the whole universe.
(ii) Belief in the Parenthood of God and in the brotherhood of mankind.
(iii) Belief in the Salvation by character, in the progress of human life forever and ever.
(iv) Belief in the teachings of Jesus, the Buddha and other great religious thinkers and leaders of the world.

Unitarianism in Question and Answers

Q13. What is the Unitarian message to sinner?
Ans:- God being a loving Father will not allow his children to eternal hellfire and damnation (for even a sparrow is not forgotten-see Lk.12:7) And the testimony below is the best reply:
A Unitarian minister was once summoned to the bedside of a dying man who has led a notoriously bad life. When asked, “What can you have to say to him? “The minister replied, “I will tell you what I have said when I return”.
On his return, the minister told that the dying man was full of alarm and dread which the lad orthodoxy had aroused in him. In order to calm the man’s mind, the minister read the parable of the prodigal son. He pointed how gladly and freely the Father had welcome his wayward lad home, and sought to make the man feel that he need not be afraid God who was his Heavenly Father. The minister further pointed out that the prodigal son had missed the opportunity which had been given to him and he would have to make greater effort in future. He must make fresh start; and no man need doubt that God would give him another chance if he turned to Him with repentant and trustful spirit.
In that faith, the dying man was asked to face death with courage and to believe that the future life was not without opportunity for redemption and ennobling the human soul.
This is a manly and reasonable religious faith to present to anyone. It is not only strengthening but also consoling a sinner in his dying moments.
Q 14. What do Unitarian say about heaven and hell?
Ans:- no one has been able to describe with certainty about heaven and hell. To us heaven is only a state or condition where there is opportunity for gaining greater beauty of character, nearer approach to God, pure heart, consecrated will and reverently peaceful soul. In short where there is peace and love for all souls. Considering the great and everlasting love of God, Our father we must be convinced that there is no hell. But there is enough hell here in this world without creating an imaginary hell in another world/ it is therefore our own volition that makes us slide into heaven or hell.
Q 15. Can you identify some passages from the Bible affirm Unitarianism or Unitarian principles?
Ans:- Yes, the Jewish itself upholds Unitarian principle (see Deut.6:4). There are many passages in the old Testament which speak of the Unity of God. Daniel was purely a Unitarian in faith. Amos, Job and other prophets were firm believers in One Living God. The New Testament verses viz; Mat.7:1 & 12,21-23; 19:17-19, etc Mk.12:28-34; Lk.17:20-21; Jn.4:23-24, 5:24 & 30 I Cor 13:1-13 etc affirm Unitarian principles in great measure.
Non-Biblical scriptures of other religions have many passages bearing and supporting Unitarian faith.
Joseph Priestly, a great scientist who discovered oxygen (himself a Unitarian) characterized Jesus and the Apostles as “The first Unitarians”. A Canadian Reform Rabbi said, “The Hebrew prophets were the first Unitarians”. To speak precisely to the points the early Christians before 325 A.D were as monotheistic as modern Unitarians.
Q.16. How do Unitarian propagate their religion?
Ans: Unitarian did never make any propaganda or preaching campaign to draw or win people for their faith nor hunting converts by intimidating hell-fire and coaxing entrants to heaven. Their main planks of action are Truth, Reason, Freedom and Toleration. And those who have ears let them hear.
